CBD Overview

WHAT IS CBD?

We have only just begun to scratch the surface of our understanding of this amazing cannabinoid. Whilst significant discoveries have been made about the medicinal benefits of CBD, cannabidiol, there is much left to reveal about this cannabinoid.

CBD is one of over 100 active compounds (cannabinoids) found in the cannabis plant. It has shown great promise as a health supplement due to its reported healing properties for many different health conditions.

HOW CBD WORKS

There is now an overwhelming amount of research and evidence which shows how CBD works in unison with our bodies and internal systems. Some of this research applies to animals too which is why there are some excellent CBD products for dogs and cats.

CBD AND THE ENDOCANNABINOID SYSTEM

CANNABINOIDS

CBD is a (phyto)cannabinoid, which is a chemical compound that can positively interact with our body’s major systems.

Phytocannabinoids imitate the action of cannabinoids that we naturally create in our body, which are called endocannabinoids.

The function of endocannabinoids is to activate cannabinoid receptors in the brain and body.

Naturally occurring cannabinoids such as anandamide and 2-arachidonoylglycerol (2AG) bind to our cannabinoid receptors to maintain proper functioning of the body.

Hemp contains over 100 phytocannabinoids which work in a similar way to the natural ones and the effect of their interaction varies depending the cannabinoid. CBD has been proven to be the most beneficial but the combination of each has a positive effect too.

The system that supports this action is known as the endocannabinoid system (ECS).

ENDOCANNABINOID SYSTEM (ECS)

The ECS is responsible for regulating homeostasis (balance) for functions such as pain, appetite, mood, and memory.

Because of the way our bodies work, numerous biological functions must remain within a specific threshold to work at optimal performance. Any deviation from this state could result in disease or dysfunction.

Nearly every major system in the body contains components of the ECS. If we can support this system by using CBD supplements then we can support the regulation of homeostasis.

The ECS is composed of:

Endocannabinoid Receptors
Endocannabinoids
Metabolic Enzymes
To understand how cannabinoids such as CBD interact with the body, it is beneficial to learn the basic process of the endocannabinoid system.

HOW THE ENDOCANNABINOID SYSTEM WORKS

The two major cannabinoid receptors, titled CB1 and CB2, sit on the surface of cells and observe conditions outside the cell.

Endocannabinoids are either synthesized (from supplements), or created naturally by our bodies on demand. They then bind to the cannabinoid receptors. If conditions outside the cell change, the cannabinoid receptors notify the cell which prompts the proper cellular response.

The receptors then communicate with our cells to bring conditions back to normal (homeostasis).

The metabolic enzymes break down the endocannabinoids and the ECS monitors a number of biological processes to support homeostasis.

As an added bonus, increasing the levels of endocannabinoids in the brain can also produce beneficial neuroprotective effects in addition to other health benefits.

CBD also interacts directly with other non-cannabinoid receptors in the brain, including opioid receptors, dopamine receptors, and serotonin receptors.

Studies have also shown that targeting these receptors through the use of CBD can reduce symptoms such as pain, addiction, depression, and anxiety.

BENEFITS OF CBD

Whilst we cannot make any official claims about the benefits of CBD (strictly under FDA regulations) and we are not medical advisers, we are aware of numerous (2000+) studies that have been undertaken and many currently in progress which discuss the positive benefits of CBD in lots of different areas of health and wellbeing.

CBD has been studied for many conditions including:

  • Immune System issues
  • Seizures
  • Pain Relief
  • Neuroprotective and anti-Inflammatory disorders
  • Cancers and tumors
  • Impact on Endocrine system and glycemic response
  • Psychosis
  • Aging
  • Anxiety
  • Treatment of substance use disorders

We recommend that you to do your own research to understand how CBD may help you. There is a great deal of useful information online.

CBD FOR PETS

CBD can be very useful for supporting our pets’ health and wellbeing too. Similar to humans, animals also have an endocannabinoid system and CBD can work with the body’s CB1 and CB2 receptors to regulate many physiological and cognitive processes.

Our CBD products for pets including cats and dogs use premium plant based ingredients to keep our pets calm, balanced and thriving in a completely natural way.

In 2017, Colorado State University’s Veterinary Teaching Hospital began a study titled, “Efficacy of Cannabidiol for the treatment of Osteroarthritis in dogs”.

VIEW FROM UNITED STATES DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH AND HUMAN SERVICES

To give further credibility to the research into the benefits of hemp derived CBD, the following excerpt is from the United States Department of Health and Human Services.

“Cannabinoids have been found to have antioxidant properties, unrelated to NMDA receptor antagonism (anesthetics). This new found property makes cannabinoids useful in the treatment and prophylaxis of wide variety of oxidation associated diseases, such as ischemic, age-related, inflammatory and autoimmune diseases. The cannabinoids are found to have particular application as neuroprotectants, for example in limiting neurological damage following ischemic insults, such as stroke and trauma, or in the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease and HIV dementia.

Non-psychoactive cannabinoids, such as cannabidiol, are particularly advantageous to use because they avoid toxicity that is encountered with psychoactive cannabinoids at high doses useful in the method of the present invention.”
